Lesson 2: Consumer Bill of Right

The Consumer Bill of Rights lists the rights that consumers are entitled. Prior to the 1960s, consumers were subject to unfair treatment and practices when purchasing goods or services from businesses. This problem was solved in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy created The Consumer Bill of Rights. However Consumers are better able to enforce their rights when they know and understand them.

ACTIVITIES

      • What does it mean "buyers beware"? How can buyers know what they are buying?
      • Find an ad in the newspaper and/or the Internet for a consumer good:
        Do you think that the ad tells all the truth about the product? Why or why not?
      • What should be required in an advertisement regarding information that the consumer should know?
      • Watch television for 1 hour. Mark down what each television commercial is selling.
        For each advertisement on TV, how much information is actually provided about the item?
      • How does the consumer know what he/she is buying?
        How much detail is provided in each advertisement?
      • Do you think do you have enough information to purchase the item being sold? Why/Why not?
